In September 2022, USGS officially notified DWR that the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) will become static in 2023 as USGS resources will be devoted to the transition to the new 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP). 3DHP will be easier to maintain, be based on a modern data model and architecture, and better meet the requirements of users that were documented in the USGS Hydrography Requirements and Benefits Study (2016). Please refer to the resources on the National Hydrography Dataset page on the California Natural Resources Agency Open Data site for more information.
USGS has allowed users of the NHD and WBD to report errors to these datasets by using their Markup Application. As of December 1, 2022, markups will no longer be accepted. Users of the NHD may contact the lead California steward directly to report errors through December 15, 2022. After that time, we will most likely be unable to process corrections to the NHD. You may contact the lead steward by email at nhd_stewardship@water.ca.gov if you have any questions or would like to discuss.
Guidance for reporting errors in the NHD to USGS, valid through November 30, 2022.
