Isaac’s term as Vice Chair will be transitioning to that of chair for the 2019-2020 year on July 1. That means we need to appoint a new Vice Chair. I encourage you to nominate either someone that you feel will do a good job, preferably after asking if they’re interested, or to nominate yourself if you’d like to step forward. Please forward this announcement to any who may be interested.

The position’s responsibilities are specified in Section 4 of the Ca. GIS Council Charter. In the past, the primary roles filled by the vice chair has been that of note taker while the chair leads meetings, as a backup to the chair when needed, and as an additional set of eyes and ears to track issues, events, and calendar items that may be of interest to the council. The position of vice chair is a two year commitment, but not an onerous one. Following a year as vice chair, the vice chair accedes to the chairmanship for the following year.

One of the requirements of the vice chairman is that they represent a different constituency within the council from the chair. As a result, we are looking for nominations from all constituencies except for County Government.

On a personal-professional note, I’ve gotten a lot out of my time as both Vice Chair and Chair, and I like my predecessors will continue to be active, possibly more so, once I leave the position of chair at the end of June. I believe that there’s a lot more that we can do with an active and engaged GIS community to fill some of the gaps in California’s GIS infrastructure and institutions.

If anyone has questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at nathaniel.roth@conservation.ca.gov
