Invitation to submit FY17 3D Elevation Program Areas of Interests

Dear Colleagues,

The 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) continues to utilize the NOAA sponsored Seasketch:  U.S. Federal Mapping Coordination – A Demonstration Site for Federal Mapping Data Acquisition Coordination) site for planning, coordinating partnerships, and tracking elevation data acquisition projects.  The system supports the maintenance and publishing of

  • Mapping Priorities: Needs, Requirements
  • Planned and Ongoing Mapping Projects
  • Existing Data

The USGS anticipates funding another round of projects through the USGS Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) in FY17. In FY16, Federal agencies contributed over $11.5M to provide matching funds in support of lidar acquisition projects submitted to the BAA. We anticipate similar levels of activity in FY17. The FY17 BAA is expected to be released through grants.gov and FedBizOpps (www.fbo.gov) in July 2016.  Public webinars to share details and answer questions on the FY17 release are scheduled for August 9th and 10th; details on these and other coordination and outreach opportunities will be posted on http://nationalmap.gov/3DEP/.

Federal, State and Local stakeholders are actively utilizing Seasketch to identify areas of overlapping interest in preparation for the upcoming BAA. Seasketch provides a mechanism for state and local groups to socialize your project and make connections to others within your area of interest. 3DEP invites you to utilize the  Updated 3DEP Project Collector Tool  to enter new AOIs under consideration for acquisition in the next 1 to 3 years.

Should you have any problems utilizing the Updated 3DEP Project Collector Tool please contact Diana Thunen (dthunen@usgs.gov). General questions regarding the 3DEP Program may be submitted to 3dep@usgs.gov. General questions regarding the BAA may be submitted to gs_baa@usgs.gov, and Drew and Carol can provide helpful information as well. For federal staff, respective federal agencies are developing internal processes to coordinate and align requirements within the 3DEP governing group; again contact Drew and Carol if you are unclear about your specific agency process and we will assist as we can.

FY15-16 projects in the southwest that were awarded funding through the 3DE BAA process include the Legal Delta, LA County, eastern San Diego County, eastern Pima County AZ, and urban Las Vegas NV. For questions about the Delta project (and possible ways to add to this upcoming collection) please contact Carol. Please feel free to distribute this email and information as widely as possible, and build projects as you are able within and external to your organizations.

Thank you,

Drew and Carol
