SUMMARY:Future Directions for Earth Observations and Data Stewardship: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This online workshop will convene participants from across the Earth observations community to exchange ideas on enhancing coordination\, collaboration\, and governance mechanisms to support a more robust ecosystem for the creation\, curation\, and operation of Earth observations and associated tools. In particular\, the workshop will explore the respective roles of the public sector\, for-profit and not-for-profit private sectors\, philanthropy\, and academia in developing strategies for addressing challenges and opportunities for resilient Earth observations and data across the growing breadth of Earth observation providers\, data\, applications\, and users. Register at the link provided. \nWorkshop objectives: \n\nAssess the contributions\, including strengths and weaknesses\, of each sector in collection\,  stewardship\, coordination\, and governance of Earth observation data\, within the global context. Consider how the roles and responsibilities may need to evolve to support and strengthen a diverse and interconnected global system in response to multiple users.\nExamine barriers\, including institutional\, legal\, political\, financial\, and technological\, that have limited creation and use of Earth observations data.  Explore opportunities to strengthen governance and improve data sharing to enhance resilience of Earth observation data.\nDiscuss common goals and approaches for improving and broadening cross-sector communication and maximizing data use and efficiency with the goal of establishing a more resilient and equitable globally integrated Earth observation system that meets evolving societal and economic needs\, as well as the need for ongoing research.

SUMMARY:GIS & Equity Series Part 2: Communities in Need
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the the second session of CGIA's Conversation Series on GIS & Equity. Register here:\n \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kde6hrDojE9TZfQ10etNPrTvb8osLMKwd#/registration \n"Disadvantaged\," "Underserved\," "Vulnerable." What do these terms mean for inclusivity and equitable distribution of government grants and services? Join CGIA ‘s upcoming Conversation about the Nomenclature and Geography of Communities in Need on Thursday\, February 15\, at 12-1 p.m. to be held via Zoom\, to learn and join the discussion. \nThe administration of countless state and federal programs in California includes distributing funds and services to communities of people that experience economic disadvantage and exposure to environmental harm in their daily lives. But there are notable inconsistencies on how these communities are defined\, named\, and delineated\, causing confusion and sometimes consternation for the people in these communities as well as agency leaders and staff. Our special guest speakers are Maria Lorenzo-Lee\, Senior Water Resources Engineer with the Financial Assistance Branch of the California Department of Water Resources\, and Dr. Sheila Lakshmi Steinberg\, Professor of GIS\, Social and Environmental Sciences at the UMass Global Institute for Geospatial Education. Join us as we learn about these issues\, possible solutions\, available data tools\, and links to resources of interest to the GIS community of practice. The session will be hosted by CGIA board member Jane Schafer-Kramer. \nThis event will be recorded and posted on the CGIA website afterwards. To join this conversation\, please use this link to register and receive the Zoom connection information. Questions about this event may be directed to chair@cgia.org.
