She is the Technical Leadperson for the WBD.\u00a0 If you have any concerns about the name changes, please send them to me.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks,<\/p>\n<p><em>Jane Schafer-Kramer, GIS Specialist<br \/>\nTechnical Lead, National Hydrography Dataset Stewardship Program<br \/>\nChair, DWR GIS Training &amp; Outreach Subcommittee<br \/>\nDepartment of Water Resources, Division of Statewide Integrated Water Management<br \/>\n901 P Street, Sacramento, CA 95814<br \/>\n(916) 653-4441<br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:Jane.Schafer-Kramer@water.ca.gov\">Jane.Schafer-Kramer@water.ca.gov<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"16\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"16\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<td>4- to 8-Digit Hydrologic Unit Name Changes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Names at the 2- to 8-digit hydrologic units in Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) originate from USGS Water Supply Paper 2294 (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/wsp\/wsp2294\/\">https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/wsp\/wsp2294\/<\/a>) which outlined the first approved boundaries, names, and numerical codes for the 2- to 8-digit hydrologic units. \u00a0For example, an 8-digit hydrologic unit might have the name \u201cApple\u201d instead of \u201cApple Creek\u201d. \u00a0This is not in alignment with the \u201cFederal Standards and Procedures for the National Watershed Boundary Dataset\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/tm\/11\/a3\/\">https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/tm\/11\/a3\/<\/a>) and is inconsistent with names in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) that hydrologic units are named after. \u00a0The inconsistency in naming protocols has caused some confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Names at the 10- to 14-digits do have the hydrographic feature type included with the name (e.g. \u201cApple Creek\u201d) and match the GNIS name of the feature the hydrologic unit is named after. \u00a0The WBD technical coordination team and WBD State Steward Work Group have discussed reviewing and adjusting all 4- to 8-digit names to reflect what is stored in GNIS and to make all WBD hydrologic units consistent, coherent, and aligned with the Federal Standard. \u00a0A name review of the 4- to 8-digit units might reveal other inconsistencies with the current standard, which would also be addressed. \u00a0Names for the 2-digit units will not be modified as they reflect regional names (e.g. \u201cMissouri Region\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>We understand that attribution changes to the 4- to 8-digit units are significant and must be carefully thought out. \u00a0Before a decision is made, we need to know how this will affect you, our users. \u00a0Please contact Elizabeth Stevens-Klein (<a href=\"mailto:estevens-klein@usgs.gov\">estevens-klein@usgs.gov<\/a>) to let the WBD team know if 4- to 8-digit name changes would cause issues with tools, processes, legal documentation, or other associated systems. \u00a0We will compile and consider all feedback over the next few months before making a decision to proceed. \u00a0Please circulate this message and respond by May 31, 2017.
