Participants learn how to use ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox and explore how these applications work together to provide a complete GIS software solution. The course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to create, edit, and work with georeferenced spatial data. Attendees learn how to manipulate tabular data, query a GIS database, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts. This course is for those who are new to ArcGIS or to geographic information systems in general.

  • Where: CSU East Bay (Hayward Campus)
  • When: 06/16 - 06/17, 2008 and 09/11 - 09/12, 2008
  • Cost: $950 (two-day, each participant and covers everything from training itself to training books, exercise dataset, 60-day evaluation version of ArcGIS, and ESRI certificates etc.)

Advanced ArcGIS
In this course, students extend their ArcGIS skills in the areas of cartography, data automation and editing, and geoprocessing and spatial analysis. Students work with advanced cartographic tools as they learn how to efficiently create effective maps. Students learn database design considerations and techniques for creating, maintaining, and managing GIS data. The ArcGIS geoprocessing tools for spatial analysis are also covered and, in a course project, students apply many of their newly acquired skills. Students will also works with Spatial and 3D Analyst extensions which provide powerful analytical and display tools for vector data, digital terrain data, and airpothos.

  • Where: CSU East Bay (Hayward Campus)
  • When: 06/18 - 06/ 20, 2008
  • Cost: $1250 (three-day, each participant and covers everthing from training inself to training book, exercise dataset, and GIS Academy certificates etc.)

NWETC Training: Introduction to ArcGIS 9 & Environmental Applications of GIS

July 16-18, 2008, 8:30 A.M. to 5 P.M. (3 Days)
California State University, East Bay
Oakland Professional Development & Conference Center
Located at Trans Pacific Center Oakland, California

Instructor: Brian Fulfrost

Description: This 3-day hands-on class introduces participants to the environmental applications of ESRI's ArcGIS 9 software. Beginning with a discussion of general concepts and vocabulary, the course will move into teaching basic ArcGIS 9 functionality. Each participant will have their own computer workstation to create, edit, display and analyze real world environmental data during numerous hands-on exercises. On the third day, participants will be given an opportunity to become more proficient with their skills by applying their knowledge to more complex and in-depth projects.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply a conceptual overview of GIS and spatial analysis to environmental data
  • Understand and utilize the fundamental capabilities ArcGIS 9
  • Conduct overlay analysis
  • Create intersects, buffers, unions and clips using the Geoprocessing Wizard
  • Measure spatial relationships between layers of geographic data
  • Perform complex relational database queries
  • Generate presentation-quality maps

Intended Audience: This hands-on course is intended for environmental and graphics professionals involved with the collection, interpretation, and presentation of spatially related data. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to utilize the capabilities of ArcGIS 9 by working first-hand on sample scenarios. Previous GIS experience is not required.
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of computer operations.

Registration: $695 (*$595 reduced tuition available for Native American tribes; government employees; nonprofits; students; and NAEP, NEBC, NWAEP members). You may register via the link below or by calling the Northwest Environmental Training Center at 206-762-1976.
